soooo went for an evening drive out on Tuesday just gone. left the meet point with the two mx5's i was with and my 4ws light comes on.... meh, ill carry on.

got to the half way point in the welsh hills and i have my handbrake & battery light come on. car feels fine though so.....i carry on :D

get 3/4 of the way through the drive....getting dark now so lights go on... hmm abs light comes on :?

so. 4 warning lights and im still driving away but then the dials go crazy and stop working, my lights become dim and im thinking...i have a knackered alternator lol

get with a few miles of home and i have hardly any electricity for lights, power etc so i hoon it back at silly speeds.....finally run out of electric altogether about half a mile from the house haha oh dear. nab my jump leads, get her going again and get home. im currently ordering a new alternator as we speak as when i tested with the multimeter the other eve after a full battery charge, the output when the car was turned on was barely 10v and rapidly reducing :D ah well. only £85 for a new one so hopefully that fixes that issue.

doh, short lived but should be an easy fix.

After recently replacing my alternator i would use the pulley from the original rather than the one that comes with the euro car parts lucas refurbed one. You wont be able to remove it unless you have an impact gun or a set of deep box spanners. The OE pulley looked like it would grip better. Maybe not an issue.

Remember, its easier for the belt to be too loose and then tighten, rather than too tight and break your alternator. However tightening the belt in situ is quite fiddly, so perhaps worth doing before you put the PS belt back on, will give you a little extra wiggle room (i normally disconnect the ABS multiplug from the bracket, and disconnect the PS resoivoir. Still a pain in the arse job...

this indeed!!!!!

so, old vs new

pulled the PS aside and old alternator out - goddamn that bolt underneath is a PITA to get to

and new one in with plenty of swearing and hitting things with hammers

also, spotted this at the bottom of the rad area - any ideas what it was supposed to connect to? only just noticed it - nothing missing/not working as far as i know

Looks like it is. The auto radiators have two pipes in and out of the bottom, for the gearbox fluid to run through and keep it cool. The auto rads can be used on manuals, you just end up with two unused pipes sticking out the bottom.

I did not know about that!
It must have been fitted years back.
