Handbrake warning light will most likely be on from the brake fluid reservoir sensor. Unscrew the cap, check the float can slide up and down and check the security of the connectors (I seem to recall they are bullet style connectors). Obviously fluid shouldn't be too low!

Also worth checking both brake lights, I'm not sure if its 5th gens, but I think earlier cars will throw an ABS error light if both brake lights are out (but I don't believe this throws an ECU code).

ABS ECU code is new to me - it could just be grumpy because of low voltage due to the alternator perhaps. Check the voltage at rest and when running. If the alternator light is still on but your getting good high 13's voltage then possibly you have the wrong alternator installed? If the battery voltage is good otherwise though, the alternator fault or light shouldn't cause ABS light to come on - so may be its own fault separately to investigate. I might have a h22a5 abs ECU, ill see what I've got.

Slowly but surely getting there it seems!

The ABS light came on during one of our Euro trips. I can't quite remember, but think it was due to crud on the rear n/s sensor.
The 4WS system has also played up, but only as a spin-off from the ABS. The rack itself and 'brain' never gave problems that I can recall.

@Scott560 thanks again for your inputs here, most useful. ill check the brake lights, BFR sensor and alternator voltage.

Thanks for the info @Sailor, the ABS error said it was the ECU as mentioned, not a sensor so hopefully an easier fix :?

@Drax I found in the garage the ignition switch (blue multiplug , white plastic goes on the end of the barrel), and the ABS ECU from my '97 h22a5 manual. Been sitting in my garage for many years unneeded.

ABS ecu is p/n 39790-s30-e01 , dark orange multiplug (2 sections).

If you need them, its yours for postage buddy.

Cheers,

Scott

@Scott560 yes please mate, pm where i need to send the money for postage to and ill reply with my address, thanks!

funnily enough i checked the brake fluid reservoir sensor and all seemed fine, went to check the brake lights and i had no error lights on the dash  so maybe either wiggling it did the trick or im not sure, seems ok now but i would defo like a spare abs ecu anyway if its not being used please, plis the ignition wire is temperamental so defo worth a swap cheers!

started to check the wheel areas under the car the other day before it goes for an MOT, a few taps around the rear OS jacking point....

ended up being this....most of a prelude :?
Image

so took the skirt off but the sill is in good nick...phew.
Image

might need the jacking point welded, not sure.

the front cleaned up well though

the front drop link rubbers are pretty fubar so ive bought replacement ones, ill throw them at the MOT guy as well as the replacement downpipe & flexi as thats blowing like a porn star.

got her back yesterday, so fitted the Motegi lip ive quickly sprayed black (need to do a better job)

and had a maiden voyage with the wife at lunchtime today after swapping the intake (as the old one had a crack in the pipe) and also after swapping the ignition barrel switch kindly supplied by @Scott560 and that seems to have fixed the dodgy wiring around that area as it quite often didnt start, so thank you!
