If I remember correctly, pre-99 5th gens had a comp. ratio of 10:1 and about 185bhp, and 99 onwards had 11:1 with 197bhp. I think the H22A8 engine (99 onwards) is pretty much the same as Type S but the Type S has around 215-220bhp? Don't quote me on that though, just what I can sort of remember from when I was looking for my Lude :)

Just had a quick browse here http://www.carrisma.co.uk/mycar.htm (I think he's a member here as well as on PUK) and here's a lot of info that will probably help you make a decision on what to start off with, and there are comparisons between different 5G engines.
