Hi. New member! :?

I found myself between cars and so my Father has sort of gifted me his prelude which he was no longer using and was SORN, but he couldn't really get around to parting with.

I really like the car, and was thinking about keeping it for a run around for a while .. BUT it's an auto and the transmission has started to go bad, slipping on up changes when cold. Dad said it's been doing that for years and he just kind of dealt with it so doesn't think it will get worse or go terminal any time soon.

I could live with that for now, but it's also started leaking gearbox Oil. (Dad said he put up with that as well) but the missus is doing her nut about it making a mess of the driveway. I'm in two minds about trying to sort the leaks and keep it or just to stick it on ebay for breaking and move on.

Anyone got any suggestions or advise? Interested to hear about the decline of anyone elses automatic transmission and how quickly it became terminal.

cheers,

Lo Matey
I have an auto and have changed my auto oil twice to keep it nice and cherry red.
Not had any issues so far.
Cheers ;)

Hi mate, Welcome to the club :)

Unfortunately the auto gearboxes in 5th gens are renowned for failing after so many miles. You could either get it rebuilt (probably the most expensive option), replace it with a lower mileage autobox (Still a ticking time bomb), or the most common fix is a manual conversion.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies! Will check if he ever tried replacing the transmission fluid. One would hope so, but you never know!

How many miles does the transmission normally last? It's on 83K now.

@Andy, I'm in Hampshire.

Mine is up past 90k and still fine 8-)
I don't use the tiptronic mode however just put it in drive and go
Is your Lude a 2.2 or a 2.0 :?:
I have often wondered if the 2.2 auto box takes more stress than the 2.0 due to the extra power :?:
Hopefully some fresh auto oil will fix the issue.
Make sure you use the proper Honda Auto Box oil though.
It does cost more but I wouldn't use anything else.
You will need 4 Litres each time you replace it.
Good luck :D

Looks like he has never replaced it :o It's a 2.2

I reckon it's worth a go.

I've been using the sequential mode at the moment, just because at least then I'm in control of when it will change up (and lose drive)

Never changed it
I think I would definitely give it a go.
ATF-DW1 is the stuff
Might be worth doing it twice to try and get as much of the old auto oil out as possible.
Leave it a while in between the two oil changes.
Not sure what other peops would suggest.
I would love to see the colour on the auto dip stick.
Cheers ;)
