Yea defo Merlin. In fact, I would probably do that to cover all areas of the system.

I got the same smell

my air con is removed, but I still got the gubbins for it in the car

could be wet weather and just damp

Some time ago I had an old Merc E class that smelled of battery acid when I got into the car. It wasn't the battery and after spraying a can of aerosol into the air con system made no difference I discovered it was a build up of mould/ fungus etc in the windscreen washer reservoir.
