5th Gen - Rusty Seat Frames

Post by PreludePete » Mon Aug 21, 2017 9:14 pm

I have recently had the dangly things aching task of stripping down two 5th Gen interiors to get the covers off, one leather and one fabric.

I was amazed to find how rusty the frames were, one set had only done 37k Miles!

The back rest back plates (facing the boot) were the worst with severe surface rust.

Since these bits are in the car, not exposed to the elements, and covered in foam I can only presume the cause is condensation!?

Any other ideas?

Pete

Hi Pete I had a similar experience with a set of Mercedes seats again frames covered in surface rust
I presumed condensation over the years Cant think of any other reason personally

Its untreated metal. All steel wants to do it return to its natural state. Oxygen is enough to do this. Iron oxide.

And obviously doesn't matter how many miles it's done, it's how long it's been in existence.

Just remember that ep of TG where forensics examined 2nd hand cars and found various undesirables, so Ratty's jizzy rust remark may well be spot on :o
