Lude Generation

Noticed in the heat of 18 degrees yesterday that my aircon has stopped blowing cold.

Can't see any sticker that says what kind of gas it uses ... suspect R-12, but read that R-134a is a possibility in later 1993 cars. I guess the aircon guy down the road will be able to tell, but would be handy to know anyway.

Where should the sticker be - and if it turns out to be MIA, is there any other quick way of finding out (filling valve shape/size, etc)?

Should be on the bar in front of the rad. Think there may be one in the door jamb too?

Nothing on the door pillar, nothing on the front cross-beam. And no relevant 12 or 134 numbers on any of the little Japanese stickers dotted around the car.

Anything anywhere that looks like 冷房 or 空調 ?

im fairly sure there is a difference in pressure between uk and jdm aircon systems so you really want to have the exact code for your car

If it was an R12 car (like mine) you might find most of the mainstream garages won't touch it.

I ended up using a mobile air-con specialist on mine.

vanzep - that sounds a bit of a concern. Must look into that further. I can't live in this 15 degree heat without my a/c!

wurly - I know a proper auto a/c guy just down the road, might pop down there tomorrow and see what he says.

Looking at the service ports, it appears to be R12 ... seems the R134 ports are more like air hose pop-on connectors, whereas the R12 ones are outside-threaded. So I read on the interweb, at least.

Can anyone with an R-12 gassed BB4, or other JDM 4g for that matter, confirm what it says on their a/c sticker with regard to pressures and so on?

was about to say that. but you beat me to it. kwik fit refused to do mine as said when they had to change to 134a the pop on plugs were fitted to stop them putting in r12 cars and they will not use or have adapters.
found an independant guy who has adapters for screw on and can add some special mix to 134a to make it work fine in r12's.

Yep, they need to add separate oil for r134a in an r12 car, to stop the compressor being ruined.

Don't have A/C stickers on either of my ludes so can't help with pressures. Does it not say in the service manual? (mind you, I would guess it would run at a different pressure with r134a than r12 anyway, due to different gas density. Probably higher because 134 is less efficient???)
