Have tested the registration page and a human definitely has to register. Think we will have to revert to Admin turning on accounts.

I know this is an active forum, but noticed that the "Most users ever online was 643 between Thu 15. Nov 2012 and Fri 16. Nov 2012". I'm not sure what the average figure is, but hope this doesnt mean that there are quite a few spam accounts in the 176 of those that are registered. Coincidence that the record is set just before some spam starts?
Going to be a busy time for admin / mods I suspect.
