VOSA told me off........

Post by Crazy_C » Wed Apr 16, 2014 9:35 pm

Well I got told off yesterday............

I was down at my mate's garage yesterday on my day off, and was helping a mate of mine out with working on some trailer electrics. The other mate of mine there came out the shop with a customer and told me to go and chat with the customer about VWs, so I did................... only to find out my mate stitched me up with talking to a VOSA engineer............. sphincter couldn't have been much more clenched!!!!

Luckily the dude was alright, told me that the arches were ok-ish but needed to span a 90 degree angle from the top centreline of the wheel to the horizontal centreline of the wheels, and that I needed to put something on the sides to mean that the jack points aren't protruding from the body (albeit within the wheel base of the vehicle)

So some head scratching, buttock unclenching and planning later, I went and got myself some sheet steel, put some curve into it, and built these for the rear and will make some up for the front as well.

About what?

The Porsche engine and transaxle swap? In all honesty, my bank balance just wouldn't fund for something like that, as much as I'd love it to. I've already changed plan from pick up truck to van for cost reasons, so I'll just stick with doing a 1641 engine, a good cam, and get it all running nicely.

Well they're that far from the tyre at the moment as I'll be fitting some taller rear wheels on there. Something like some 215/80/15s (running 195/70/15s currently on the rear)

New engine

Post by Crazy_C » Sat May 24, 2014 6:14 pm

Been a while since I updated this so bear with me!!

I now have some bass in the car. My mates who own a car audio shop had a couple of subs and boxes they had left over, so trial fitted them in the bug, worked nicely, so I put them in :D Not a pretty install, but then again, not a pretty car

The oil leak in the car was getting ridiculous too, so I bit the bullet, and got a rebuilt engine. 1641cc twin port longblock with an Engle 120 performance cam in it.

How it was delivered:

Couple of hours later:

After building it up to this stage, I then went to change the clutch over, and the old clutch was a 200mm one, and the new engine takes a 215mm clutch, and it was on a bank holiday so everywhere was shut. So whilst I had nothing more I could do at that stage, I grabbed the angle grinder!

Makes engine work so much easier plus takes no time at all to remove the engine now!

Once I got the new 215mm clutch, fitted it all back into the bug, and it wouldn't start. Tried playing around with a few bits, and nothing. Turned out the guy who rebuilt the engine timed the cam in wrong  So back out the engine came, and he collected it, and sorted it and ran it on the bench just to make sure all was spot on. Got a phone call from him telling me it was done, but he wasn't able to deliver, it. Pulled the passenger seat out the Mustang, drove over to Dagenham and picked it up. Turns out that a Beetle turnkey engine fits perfectly in a fox body Mustang passenger seat area! Millimetres to spare!

Got everything all bolted back in again and the Hummock was alive once more!

Yesterday, I thought it was about time to sort out that stupid rusty old exhaust and put something proper on there, so I got a set of Zoomie cannons and J-tubes, cut some more metal out from the rear, and got them fitted in, and damn they sound glorious!!

New wheels!

Post by Crazy_C » Tue Jul 01, 2014 11:16 pm

Well I've got some new wheels on the Hummock, and lets just say, they're definitely a bit of me!!!

The fronts are standard 15" x 4.5J, with 165/65/15s on them.
The rears were standard 15" x 4.5J wheels, but banded out to 9.5J, with 255/70/15s on them!!!
