How do keys work?

Well, I know how keys work, but I'm wondering if someone can explain how the oem key with button is supposed to function?

Does is merely unlock the doors?

Are the keys supposed to charge up while in the ignition?

How many keys are supplied and what's the red one about?

I have one original key for my car, but the button is broken and I think one of the steel pins that run down the side of the blade (for charging?) is broken.

Can replacements be obtained?

Ta

I don't know, but I'll be amazed if they charge. Should pop open to reveal a battery.

More help soon, doubtless, from someone who actually knows things :D

EDIT: If it's technically possible I should probably have some rep removed for that :?

Does is merely unlock the doors? Yep, within a foot range

Are the keys supposed to charge up while in the ignition? Yes.

How many keys are supplied and what's the red one about? I think three including the master. The red is the master which is required to create replacements with the same code.

I have one original key for my car, but the button is broken and I think one of the steel pins that run down the side of the blade (for charging?) is broken.

Can replacements be obtained? If you can get hold of a replacement key I imagine you can transfer the innards across.

Did 4g's with remote unlocking come with a red key then? Really?

I'll only guessing that bit, hence the "think". Come to think about it properly now, I've never seen a red key with a button

I was getting excited there for a minute - It was making me think there was hope for reprogramming my bb4 instead of having to swap brains over

Loads of info here buddy:-

http://www.preludepower.com/forums/show ... p?t=313176

Also possible to reprogram another key fob by:-

If you buy a second hand one you can reprogram it to your car by
1)unlocking the doors
2) turn key to on
3)press lock or unlock on fob
4)turn key to off
5)turn key to on
6)press lock or unlock
7)turn key to off
turn key to on
9)press lock or unlock
10)turn key to off
11)turn key to on
12)press lock or unlock. Leave for longer than 10 secs to abort and or turn key off to abort
13)press lock unlock on each fob (max of 3 can be stored)
Steps 2-12 should be completed within 5secs for each step and 12 and 13 within 10secs for each step

There seems to be a mix up between 4th and 5th gen systems here.

I think the OP is asking about 4th gen JDM keys with infrared; there is no red key as far as I am aware, there is no immobiliser system, the key does recharge in the ingintion, all it does is operate the central locking from close up.
