How to replace rear wheel bearings

Post by Kawa » Tue Sep 07, 2010 10:11 pm

1) jack the car up and secure with an axle stand.
2) chock up the front wheels (the hand brake will not work while the wheels are in the air :!:)
3) remove rear wheel
4) remove rear brake caliper
5) remove rear brake disk
6) remove centre 'hub cap' - I grinded the end of the flat bladed screw driver to produce a very thin end and used this to prise the 'hub cap' from the hub assembly. Be careful not to damage the hub cap as we want to re-use it. The manual suggests replacing it.

7) Using a hammer and screwdriver, prise open the locking tab of the hub nut.

8 ) Using a 32mm socket remove the hub nut

9) Remove the retaining washer - a little fiddly as you can't get your finger in there!! I used 2 screw drivers at 3 and 9 o'clock on the washer to grip and pull the washer out.

10) Using a 3 legged puller - The carrier came off with very little effort at all, but unfortunately left the inner bearing surface on the spindle. Using the same grinded screwdriver, I carefully removed the remainder of the bearing from the wheel spindle.

11) After the spindle was inspected and cleaned, the new bearing carrier was fitted onto the spindle. Retaining washer and hub nut was refitted and torqued up to 185Nm. A small amount of sealant was smeared onto the hub cap before refitting.

12) Refit brake disc, caliper and wheel.
