This is a bit of a write- up on me swapping over my sunroof to carbon I did a couple of years back. should be the same for just swapping to another metal panel too

So here goes
Slide the roof back slightly to expose the 2 screws either side and unscrew
Image

slide hand under and pop out the clips holding the cover in place
Image

pull it forward slightly then slide it back out the back
Image

this reveals the 8 - 10mm nuts, unscrew and the roof lifts right off.
Image

note the 'E' shims that set the height for when putting it back on and lining up
Image

now this is where you see where the waters got to it and rusted the brackets that hold the seal in place
Image
Image
Image

undid the 4 - 8mm nuts, 1 in each corner and undid all the screws, took off the seal to reveal the full damage to the old roof
Image

here shows where brackets just fell apart from the rust
Image

so I rubbed it down with emery cloth and gave it a coat with rust remedy
Image

to say its got a great fit is the understatement of the week, so after alot of sweat, some blood, some widening of holes with a drill and a liberal application of swear words finally got the seal and brackets back on
Image
Image

oh and dont forget so swap over the little clips that the 1st screws from pic 1 screw into :D
Image

To re-fit retrace steps backwards

So hard part over... or so i thought! Lining the new roof back on is no easy task!

It takes a bit of adjustment moving the panel so when it closes it sits perfectly. Just need to be patient and keep making slight adjustments before tightening the nuts back up until you get it right

I had adjusted the different 'E' shims to get the height correct and even used a few washers I found lying around to get it sitting better as it sat too low with just the original shims on their own (this should be easier when just swapping for a replacement metal roof)

Finally back on

And for me too :D

I've just treated the rusty bits on my sunroof but I can't get a good paint match so I've been thinking of removing the sunroof and respraying the whole thing (one option) but now you've given me another option which would be to cover the whole panel with carbon fiber.

May I ask where you got the carbon fiber from and how easy was it to apply (and make it look that good)?

My thought now is to cover the whole panel without removing it thus avoiding the 'joys' of having to re-aline it. I think that a carbon fiber sunroof would look sweet on a Mk4 silver Lude 8-)

Good write up mart and as the others said good timing, i might get round to fitting mine some time soon  .

Dobbs with regards to the CF panel in the pics there was a group buy on the PUK forum years ago where a company designed and manufactured them with help from a forum member so its a solid CF panel, i did see one for sale a little while ago but dont know what happened to it.

dobbs, Bucks was correct. I think the groupbuy was with 12tune, which still sell them.

Doh! :stupid:

I though that it was a standard sun roof that you'd covered with 'stick-on' carbon fiber - no wonder it looks so good
