2010 May - Chassis rebuild / polybush / steering Rack

Post by Kawa » Sun Aug 28, 2011 9:20 am

I've had all this stuff in the garage for 3 or 4 years, this weekend I pulled my finger out at last.

1. Have removed all the suspension arms off the front.
2. Replaced front lower ball joints.
3. Fit front camber kit to the upper arms.
4. Fit new front poly anti roll bar bushes.
5. Fit new front ARB drop links.
6. Split the front suspension struts down and cleaned them up, ready to send off for refurb (pennies pending  )

Tomorrow the lower arms and suspension arms are getting blasted, ready for painting. Also getting the old bushes pushed out ready for poly inserts.

No pics can not get them off my phone :?

still lots to do :?

ABS to be removed.
Cruise control to be removed.
Reconditioned steering rack to go on.
Fit new CV joints.
Rear sub-frame swap.
Fit poly bushes in rear.
refurd rear shocks.
Clean up the brake calipers.
Adjust handbrake.
Braided brake hosing.
Fit cat and new gaskets.
Cam cover gaskets.
Clean up the sump (oil leak from cam cover gasket).
MOT.
Tax :?

I'm in no rush, we'll get there :)

Old steeing rack dropped out and cross member cleaned up.

2010 Jun - ABS Removal

Post by Kawa » Sun Aug 28, 2011 9:23 am

Thanks to Si, today we worked on removing the ABS.

Not a very good picture here, but first we removed the brake booster and master cylinder - note the big space to left of the engine below

Image

Si hard at it...

Image

After removing the ABS unit, we fitted the brake proportioning valve. We could not find any pics on the internet anywhere of where it is supposed to be located. After much head scratching we found it!!

Image

Image

We made up a couple of new brake lines, but to be fair, we could have got away with using all the original pipework.

The cheapo ebay brake flaring tool did the job very well!!

2010 Sep - Rear chasis build / 4WS removal

Post by Kawa » Sun Aug 28, 2011 9:27 am

Got the front end back together last week, new oil, filter, plugs, re-furbed and painted the calipers. Gave the engine bay a very quick polish.

Today I've got the back end 5ft in the air! brakes are off, just about to take the rear shocks and control arms out. 4WS is coming out too.

Here are a few pics of the front end before the brakes and wheels went on

Image

Image

2 wheel subframe is ready to go in

Image

rear control arms need a little tlc, but over all in good condition - still need to fit the poly bushes

Image

Arse in the air!!

Image

Rear suspension is out ready from strip and repaint

Image

The fight against rust - underside of the car with 4ws removed.

Image

Rear end after a few rounds of anti rust syrup

Image

2 coats of Acid Etch primer

Image

Image

2 costs of paint

Image

then added under-seal over the top after the paint had dried.

Cleaned up the rear control arms and removed the bushes ready for painting. Gave the rear ARB a quick tidy up, but really it wants dipping in acid and plastic coated.

Here are the rear shocks, in worse condition than the fonts :?

Image

The bump stops are split on both sides - foruntately i have poly replacements ready to go in.

Image

Spent a bit of time stipping the paint and loose rust off the shocks ready for painting tomorrow.

2WS subframe in place

Image

Lower control arms painted and bushed up, note the steel inserts are not yet pushed in (pictured top left)

Image

Rear Teins rebuilt with new poly bump stop and poly upper shock bush.

Image

Rear shock and lower arm fitted

Image

Ingals camber kit. The variant I went for are the ones that attach the upper wishbone to the chassis.

All set

And today was MOT day..............PASSED!!! woop! woop!

Why did you remove the 4WS and plan to remove other stuff? Going lightweight?

Thats the plan buddy. The bodywork no longer warrants a showy-type-car. So plan is now to see how well (or not  ) we can do on the quarter mile.

Would like to do a bit of work on the top end (hopefully) as she's smoking a bit. Finger crossed it is the top end. Need some funds first though :?
