Good News! after all the worry and wrecking all you poor folks heads it was all down to the top bolt that holds the alternator in place had become very loose :suicide:
I should have known and just traced back the last working area on the car and saved myself all the despairing!
Feeling lucky but it could have easily been something worse.

Was considering the power steering pump also as that was swapped over a few weeks back and the donor one has sprung a tiny weep on it near the pulley, never had one of these fail but was willing to accept this as the noise too.

On the last startup just there it was easily narrowed down for some reason to that area but the way the sound traveled right through the mounting bracket and over the cam cover was throwing me off!
New day new theory and one happy chap.

Thanks for all the input guys,i'm just glad i started it up once more before i went stripping off the cam cover
