Vss failing again

Post by Greg-SiR » Mon May 30, 2016 1:41 pm

Was on the way to work on Saturday and hit 2nd to 3rd in Vtec to nearly rev limit only for the speedometer to fail on me.

Had an issue 6+ months ago with this too and sought a cheapo Ebay sensor unit only for it be failing within days aswell.

So i cleaned out the connectors on the original and little spindle are which had some oil residue hanging out and put it back in snug and that was it till now, happy days!

Always happens under a Vtec burst and usually that 2nd to 3rd if it will.

Just feels quite easy to remove the unit from the gearbox,i noticed this the first time i was at the area too, should i be able to lift the unit out so easily?

Obviously it needs the bit of play for the engine movement.

I'm feeling it may be rising slightly a bit under high revs causing the sensor to trip out...

I'm fairly certain it shouldn't have any play at all, I think the VSS should be held in place by a bolt and a small retaining bracket. It certainly is on other cars which I've worked on, and usually they're a dancer to remove.

Yeah there should be no movement in the VSS at all. It should be solid as a rock in its attachment to the gear box.

Can see in the photo why. It should be bolted down onto the gearbox. The bracket for doing this is sheered off. Need a new VSS casing and the bolt. You can see the hole in the pic were it bolts to.

I should have asked this ages ago then arghh.
But in fairness it hasn't given an dramas for ages, considering it's been unbolted all this time i've been pretty lucky then.
Next Q is how model specific are they and the feed lines on it where are they routing from?
Mine looks the same on the bottom of the pic there newkid thanks for that btw ;) but top have has some differences.

Lines are to do with power steering. @merlin will know exactly what they do.

Yeah they are from the power steering. The 4th gen VSS is different to the 5th gen. The 5th gen VSS does not have the PAS lines on it.
