Oily smell on VTEC
Morning all
I noticed a bit of an oily smell after going into the high cam rev range the other day, as I happened to have my window open.
Valve stem seals possibly? Bit of an arse to replace but not too bad on the whole? Is there a guide on here? I'll be doing my cam belt and water pump soon anyway...
Whilst searching for such things, I came across a set of Accord Type-R heads and cams on eBay. Presumably swapping in the ATR cams (or, indeed, replacing the whole head) without remapping isn't going to give a great deal in terms of performance gains?
Thanks in advance!

generally, oil from the exhaust you can't smell it so much.
If you can smell it in the cabin, its generally after the car has come to rest, and more likely to be a different oil leak leaking on the exhaust at the engine bay end of the car - then immediately smell-able.
in my case it was the oil cooler to block ring (about 7quid seal i think, easy job to do if you can jack car up both sides high at the front and get right to the back of the engine block).

Hmm. I was still moving at the time, and could only smell it in the cabin because the window was open.
I've never noticed it after the car has stopped.

most likely some oil from the head - rocker cover, cam end cap, vtec solenoid or distributor
i had good results from fitting 5ht gen/ATR cams - had one of robs V2 spoon chips fitted to the p13 ecu and 5th gen 62mm throttle body - not what you would call tuned but the cams felt like they made a difference

Thanks Vanzep. Rocker cover gasket and spark plug seals are, in my opinion, past their best. Replace those you reckon before mucking about with valve stem seals?
Food for thought on the cams.... with no other mods than breathing I wonder if it would be worth the investment (I'm trying my best to put myself off the idea here!

i think with the H22 you are best to start at the top of the engine and look for leaks & work your way down
rocker cover gasket, cam end cap and spark plug seals are good to start with
If you are on tight budget then for best breathing fit the 5th gen 62mm tb and type s intake or proper long arm cold air induction kit.
there is a good deal on tenzo r ones. i will find the link if you like.
also plm mani and 2.5" pipes with no cat and mugen twin loop are a great combo once you get round to the exhaust

I've noticed that before.
Don't quote me on this, but I didn't find anything to worry about.
Just keep an eye (nose) on it.

@Sailor Ha ha I'll keep my nose peeled...
@vanzep Stupid question but as mine is a 5G anyway don't I already have a 62mm TB? Yes please by all means link me up to the Tenzo kit. I was thinking along the lines of a BMC CDA, which I have on my FTO and is lovely

The larger throttle body for the 5th gen came on the h22a8 (red top) engine, as did the typeS air intake.
As for camshafts, I believe A8, TypeS and ATR camshafts are all very similar (if not the same). Somebody correct me on this if I'm wrong.

Yes thats right Tom
And the tenzo kit is sold out - i had an order placed but supplier said when they checked it was different part in the box so refunded me
I did buy one previously but that went with my BB4 when i sold it.
