You can get fancy timing lights, ones that fire only when set, but the one I used was as old as the hills. A cheap one should do the job.Blarge wrote:@@Merlin Thanks for the information and link I will give it a go at the weekend providing I can get a timing light. Would a cheap one from Halford's be worthwhile our should I spend a little more for the extra features? Reason I ask is I've got a few classic cars being worked on at the moment. One is a practical nut and bolt rebuild 1970 Mg Midget and suspect the engine will be looked at soon even though its only got 30k genuine miles on it.
Congratulations to vtecmec for winning May/June's Lude Of The Month, with his DIY Turbo BB1 build.

I guess the oil leak could cause issues, but it would depend what it was leaking on to of course.Blarge wrote: @@bennyboy Yes I did wonder if the ICM was on it's way out, I have seen a replacement one on EuroCar parts and thought it might be wise to replace as I've done the rest of the ignition parts. In regards to if the dizzy is the original I'm not sure I have checked the work the previous owners have had on it but see no mention of it. I have checked the cables and they do look new could the contacts have moisture in it cause something similar? Maybe some dielectric grease on the connectors? I have noticed a small oil leak just above it so it might be worth taking of and replacing the O rings when I'm investigating it. When you replaced yours where did you source yours?
I got my TD60U dizzy from these guys:

Basically Probe Distributors trade as Motor Parts World on ebay, but I found mine was cheaper on ebay than through their site. They do seem to have put prices up, mine was £150.

BTW: When I was saying about the dizzy wires, I mean the internal ones, just in case you thought I meant the external loom, which still looked perfect on my old one:

Thanks for the help and advice so far.
@Merlin Thanks seems halford's have stopped doing them
, I'll get it off Amazon with prime otherwise I won't see it till the new year. Something like the below should be good enough?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-52616-Xe ... ming+light
@bennyboy Thanks for the link I will look into getting one, in light of the issue you had its safer to just replace it! At least I know it will all be new and not need doing for another 20 years I hope
I will get it ordered in the next few days. I'll take it to the garage to get them to fit it then.
One thing I did notice this weekend was the exhaust is blowing slightly where I had the garage fit it, seems they used some bonding solution that hasn't sealed correctly. Could also the lack of back pressure cause hesitation? I am off to a place on Tuesday to get the exhaust gaskets just to rule it out so thought it was worth asking.

I suppose the next things to check after the dizzy replacement is a fuel pump as the filter is being done Tuesday and the injectors have been checked and confirmed as working? I did wonder if I should just take it to Rich at PAW and give the car a look over its not too far from me. I think ill call him tomorrow and see what their schedule is like.
Thanks for your help so far

Hi All,
Quick update, the car started making a strange noise from under the rocker cover today. Had the AA recover me to PAW just to be on the safe side. The AA guy thought it might be a tappet has gone or a valve gone bad but I'll wait to see what PAW say they looked after me well last time I took the car there. They are also going to diagnose the misfire issue and will let you all know the outcome. Hope its not too expensive this near to xmas.
@damon I'll update the thread once I know more as it might help you out with your misfire.

Hi all,
Just drove the car back home from PAW and all is working well
and no misfire present! I can't thanks Rich and his team for sorting this for me and for the help I have got on the forum.
The problem was the O2 sensor had gone faulty, lucky I already had a new one in the car! Two spark plugs had also managed to work loose and this explained the strange noise in the top of the rocker. Rich explained this is because they were not tightened correctly. While they might have been tight there was washer that wasn't compressed and they shook loose. The HT leads also seems to come loose and suggested that this can happen with the cheaper HT leads. Rich suggested when adding the cheaper HT leads to pull back the rubber boots and clip on to the spark plug. When I bought them I was going to get the Magnacor ones but decided to get everything from the same place. I have learnt the hard way! I shall be getting the Magnacor ones after I have had some use out of these ones. Thought I would write this up and give back should anyone not be able to get to PAW as easily as myself it might help you out.
@damon Hope the above helps, Rich did also mention that my Dizzy has been replaced at sometime not sure if yours has been? Let me know how you get on after you have had your valves adjusted.
