vanzep wrote:ive got similar clicky type rattle - was 2500-300rpm now dropped to 2000rpm - coming from cambelt side - and its noticeable when engine is warmed up. Im thinking valve clearance or the fact that i missed putting the wee rubber bit on the edge of the new water pump.....ive just done cambelt change and manual tensioner conversion as well so would be interesting to see what you find out. Im going to try and find time to have a look this weekend. Worst case ive imagined is worn piston rings :?
Sounds like the same noise mine is making again, but I had an auto tensioner put in rather than manual as I didn't want hassle, that was about 2k ago so I guess it could be going again.
I also imagined worn rings which scares me, but worrying won't fix it I guess!

Let is know what you find Gayno.

I would check heat shielding around the cat best trick to locate odd noises is a screwdriver/spanner placed against different parts of the engine with your ear next to it you will be amazed at what you hear with this trick
A failing power steering pump made mine sound like Poo

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

It's not a jingly/tinny rattle, so different to the "sound of keys" mentioned and I don't have heat shield under the cat!

I sounds more related or connected around the actual engine block.

On my list of possibilities so far are: injectors, valve clearances or something cambelt related (cambelt is nearing change - 4.5 years and 45,000 miles)

I'm looking to get the car up to PAW in the near future for a few thing so if it doesn't get majorly worse I may just leave it for Rich to try and locate!

I the mean time I may drop the oil and replace with fresh and see if that has any effect on the noise.

I may also try and get video of the noise and post it back here

Exactly what I was thinking! Plus forged Mahle pistons when cold sound like an old diesel!

Listening to the engine is a good tip, if you can get to mine I'll have a listen dude, unless it's major rattle or sounds like the bottom of the engine my guess would be something in the valvetrain, swapping to fresh oil might help, if it does then pop the rocker cover and have a gander for any kind of wear or parts not moving as freely as they should. Certainly doesn't seem to have killed the power, if you want another easy option to try, take off the PS belt and if it's quiet it's the PS pump. If it is the PS pump sling me a text dude, I have one doing nowt ;)

My H22A7 is a bit noisey when cold - not at idle though - only when you blip the throttle a little - Richy said (PA fitted the engine) it was piston slap, which he had come across before on a few H22's and was nothing to worry about too much. I just let it warm up properly before I gun it anywhere, and by that I mean the oil temp at least to 60'C. Once its fully warmed up the noise goes away.

Chris - certainly hasn't killed the power, Racewars showed that yesterday. Really don't think it's the PS pump though as it's coming from back of the engine.

Thanks Tim - but mine is opposite. Can't hear it when cold, but appears when warm.

Mine makes a strange noise, then all my petrol goes. Seems to be linked to the throttle and RPM

But that's normally accompanied by a noise such as "BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH" not a rattling!
