I have lost those plug seals when removing rocker covers the tend to drop into the engine bay if it dropped into the top of the engine it would be pretty easy to see

Yeah, if it dropped into the top of the engine while removing it yesterday, I would have thought it would be easily spotted. However, i'm a bit of a worry bag and as that part is still AWOL, I'm still worried it might be in there :(

It would have to get mashed up pretty fine for it to make it down into the block. There would be some evidence of it being in the head if it was in there.

We used a hammer to lightly tap the spark plug seals into place.

That's what I thought.. To work and back is only a 7 miles round trip with a max speed of 40 mph (hence why I usually get the bus, but needed the car for an appointment yesterday), so it's not as if it had loads of miles to get chewed up. As there was no trace of it, I dont think (and hope) it ended up inside the engine.

Its possible its bounced through your bay and onto the floor and probably rolled away...

 I feel like a bit of a pleb now, getting all worried about it possibly running on only 3 cylinders or having an alternator problem, when all along it was my fault due to not taking enough care when refitting the valve cover with new seals
