What about just revving the engine while stationary?

I can't think of what it could be, I'm sure some one here will  This is going to sound silly (and it getting louder doesn't make sense) but are you *sure* there's nothing stuck in the tyres and it's definitely coming from the engine bay?

Ah right. Well I've exhausted my troubleshooting  Anything I'd say would be a shot in the dark.

Most garages will check these things for free by the way, might be an idea? Audible problems are always hard to analyse on the net.

Wonder if it's Premature Detonation - is it only when the car is under load.

Is the noise rev dependant or speed dependant?

Does anything change when braking or steering? (other than slowing down or driving in a different direction)

A golf of mine did something like this, although it turned out to be the air con unit/pump/thing... Possibly a bearing went in it so whenever you were driving along it would start ticking quicker and louder until it sounded like a pneumatic drill under the bonnet!... turned the air con off and all was fine. Very odd.
