So in theory something like Tungsten Carbide could be used? Or other alloy that has these strength/maliability characteristics as long as they won't gum up the FRM by doing an impression of lead? I'm sure there are places making titanium pistons but it has very poor abrasion resistance yet it is tough as nails, maybe an aircraft grade alloy might work?

I recon Mahle know what they're doing and are probably using the best possible alloy for the job. A piston has to withstand some of the most extreme environments - 1000+ degree flame fronts, around a thousand PSI of pressure (under knock), thousands of G's and skirt friction at over 25 metres per second! On top of dealing with all that is has to be as light as possible and be sized to within a thousandth of a millimetre... It's engineering bordering on art.
