damn I stripped a rocker cover bolt

Post by akiragost » Fri Feb 27, 2015 2:40 pm

So I think I stripped a rocker cover bolt, it turns cw and ccw but it doesn't tighter or come off. How do I remove this? It happened on my old prelude before but I can't remember how I sorted it out? And when I do get it out. Do I just replace the nut? Or need to get the bolt too, don't even know where to get these from, someone help please, I need to get my rocker cover off but for the life of me dunno how to remove this nut!

Its a pain in the arse when that happens...it will most likely be the stud - either the thread has stripped and nut just spinning or the nut is jammed onto the stud and the stud is spinning- i had to replace a few of the studs on mine.
take all the other nuts off and get some upward pressure and the try turning the nut - even if the nut doesnt come off you may be able to undo the stud from the head but will take quite a few turns.
there are a couple of different sizes so you need to look on lings to make sure you get the right one.
i have a few spares here from 4th gen but should be same part for 5th gen
hope this helps :)

get a flat headed screwdriver under the silver washer lever it up slightly while turning the nut and you should get it to start to bite

Really? Where is it actually stripped? Will I need to put in a new bolt, retap etc?

You won't need to retap, buy a brand new dome bolt and stud from lings, happened to me and it's just a case of unscrewing the stud once you have taken the rocker cover off, I used it as a good excuse to get in there and check all the valve clearances too :)

Yea gonna give everything a go. And I saw those washer and bolt kits for the rocker cover on ebay. It says they fit preludes but how does that work? I thought our preludes used the studs and on top are nuts so how do I just use bolts like the ones they're selling? I've seen some pics on google of people doing it too with bolts.
