oil leak locations?

Post by bristol_bb4 » Mon Apr 09, 2012 1:20 pm

just got back from a weekend away up north and came back to find my ludes developed an oil leak! i know the usual places where leaks start but it doesnt appear to be coming from any of them? ive checked -

vtec solenoid
oil filter
rocker cover

i did change the oil and filter 3 or 4 weeks ago and cleaned out the vtec solenoid while i was there but as said, it doesnt appear to be coming from there, the oil is dripping from the bottom of the gearbox, none around the sump etc and the filter is clean

any ideas? :(

is it engine oil ? if its dripping from the box maybe its box oil.

very distinctive smell to box oil so a finger wipe and a sniff should let you know but make sure your finger hasn't gone through the toilet paper and you washed your hands after your last number 2 so as not to get confused

When you checked the rocker cover did you check the cam end seal, sits obscured a bit by the vtec solenoid, has the oil filter started to leak? sometimes if they're pinched up that little bit too much they develop a little leak, sump plug maybe, did it get a new washer? did you over or under tighten it possibly, worth checking as only takes 2 mins with the car jacked up, lesser prone areas would include stuff like sump gasket, maybe even a split breather hose or joint that's weeping oil from the blowby. Usually it's something small and annoying.

Good luck dude

Tramroadmotors I just gave you bad rep points by mistake a minute ago, (my finger slipped) so I have given you good ones to make up for my mistake

When I am allowed to I will give you some more good ones!

i was going to say the cam bung as well.

if you have had the rocker cover off there is a good chance the bung has been shifted. they are a bit of a fill in design fix i think. if the sealant has broken it will deffo leak.

run a cotton bud round the underside and see if its fresh. that is leaking down the gearbox side is a hopeful. otherwise it might be your main shaft seal :(
6th gen Prelude please Mr Honda. RWD 2.4 turbo lude.

Sump gasket? Quite common after recent oil changes.
