Timing belt replacement

Hi folks,

I'm thinking that it would be prudent to change the timing belt on both the Prelude and Accord... Just wanted to check that all H22A engines take the same size timing belt?

Also, is there anything worth replacing whilst I'm in there other than the balance belt, pulleys and water pump? I'm thinking cam and crank seals too  Am I also right in thinking that I need to fit a balance shaft seal retainer if the cars haven't had them already?

Cheers,
Josh

unless anything is leaking I personally wouldn't bother with any seal replacement, but that's just me. id do;
timing belt
balance belt
power steering belt
alternator belt
water pump
new oil
new coolant

unless you are upgrading your engine, the auto tensioner, unless damaged or faulty, should be just fine for stock(ish) build

yeah i went the whole hog as the crank pulley came loose and the timing hadnt been touched in 12 years and all seals&pulleys were original 20yrs old
so pick and choose what you actually need :)

And personally, I wouldn't do the water pump if the engine has been properly maintained (i.e. regular coolant changes) and the bearing feels fine.
Popular opinion these days is to just change everything on engines though. It's a great racket for manufacturers.

Agree with vanzep though - these things are now over 20 years old, so there is that consideration, as a one-off.

My BB4 was built in 1991, so it's about as long in the tooth as a 4th gen can get

Coolant hasn't been changed regularly, and the service history for my car in the UK is patchy iirc/the Japanese history is non-existent, so I was thinking that changing as much as possible might save me hassle in the future. I'd rather spend more and not have to revisit it.

But then again, if it ain't broke...

At any rate thanks for the advice guys, I'll bookmark this and come back to it when I'm ready to do the belt change. Won't be until I've moved barn on the Prelude. I'll probably get a garage to do the Accord and supply parts myself  getting lazy in my old age...

*edit:

Just remembered this is the only car I have FSH for   I'll go check what it's had done and work back from there.

I am in the other camp, if you have everything apart why not do the water pump and be done with it. Chances are that the water pump has never been changed.

That was what I said about the 20+ year consideration as a one off consideration.

As a component though, they aren't specced to have a 6 year/60,000 mile life, they're specced to have a much longer life than that, and be inspected at 6 year/60,000 intervals.

Nothing wrong with replacing them if you want of course. Same as (e.g.) replacing the big end bearings if you have to change the sump - they're all things you could do at the time if you want, but you don't need to.
