Prelude H22 Cambelt change parts
Posted: Sun Apr 10, 2016 11:20 am
This is a massive FAQ on here (comes up loads of times) but I couldn't find any of the pages when I looked yesterday
so gonna make a new one, with parts diagrams and after-market options, where possible.
This lists all parts that must or could sensibly be changed.
Links on where to buy oem or after-market parts are not included, since they can change over time and go 'dead'.
If anyone notices any errors or omissions, please let me know and I will update.
Rocker cover; Number 3 and 4 can be re-used but likely to leak if you do that after all these years, so best to renew.
OEM part numbers;
3 = 12341P13000
4 = 12342PT2000
Any seals over and above that are entirely optional.
Use of a suitable sealant in the corners of the rubber at the camshaft cut-outs (as indicated in the manual) is absolutely necessary. Most people use genuine Hondabond.
Note: 1 includes items 3, 4 and 12 and if you're replacing *all* of them, it's cheaper than buying all of those items individually.
1 = 12030P13000
Aftermarket options;
Pattern part rocker gasket sets are available through various suppliers (rockauto, ebay etc.). They have been used with varying degrees of success.
Various third party sealants could be used instead of Hondabond.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Valve Train; Number 8 is the Inlet camshaft end seal and should be renewed if still original.
OEM part number;
8 = 12513P30000
After-market options;
The OEM seal is perfectly ok when new, but the rubber tends to swell as it ages and it starts to weep, so most people go for an after-market design with multi O-rings. ebay is your friend if you dont need it urgently (probably being sent from China) alternatively if you don't want to wait ages (from UK) then Skunk seals are available from funkypower, Hond-R etc. Blox seals are as good, cheaper and available from h-tune.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Camshafts/Timing Belt; 10 is the balance shaft tensioner roller. Can be re-used if ok - but must check it as per the service manual.
17 is the cambelt, 11 is the balance shaft belt. Both must be changed.
18 is the timing belt tensioner roller. Can be re-used if ok - but must check it as per the service manual. If in doubt, change it (and if still original, probably worth changing it now anyway)
23 is the auto-tensioner. This can either be user serviced (details are in the service manual), replaced like-like or changed for a manual tensioner. Unless you have a heavily modified engine, auto tensioner is absolutely fine. Don't just re-use it without checking it over as per the service manual though - you must renew or service.
Number 38 are the camshaft end seals. Can be re-used but if still original, it would be worth getting them changed. If obviously leaking, then you must change them.
OEM part numbers;
10 = 13404P13003
11 = 13405PT0004
17 = 14400P13014
18 = 14510P13003
23 = 14520P13013
38 = 91213PR3004 (There are 2 OEM manufacturers listed under the same part number. It doesn't matter which you go for)
After market options;
Oil seals. You could go after-market from any seal supplier. Oil seal dims are: 29x43x8
Timing and balance belts are also available. Gates part numbers are T226 (Timing belt) and either 5235XS (standard balance belt) or T186 (1mm wider balance belt, optional).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Balance/crank shafts; 28 is the balance shaft seal. 27 is the crank shaft seal. Can be left in place/re-used but if still original, it would be worth getting them changed. If obviously leaking, then you must change them.
Not shown is the balance shaft retainer. This was a later addition and I can't find it shown on any parts diagrams at the moment, so here is a pic of the kit instead;

If your engine already has it, just re-use it (doesn't need to be replaced). If you don't have it, then you should buy and fit one.
OEM part numbers;
27 = 91212P0A004
28 = 91233PT0003
Balance seal retainer = 06923P0A306
After market options;
Oil seals. You could go after-market from any seal supplier. Oil seal dims are: 40x52x7 (no. 27) and 27x40x8 (no. 28)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crank pulley; 22 is the woodruff key. Doesn't need to be changed but worth keeping a spare in case you drop/lose yours when you remove the crank pulley, or in case it is worn/chewed up (has been known)
OEM part numbers;
22 = 90704PT0000
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Water pump Number 1 is the water pump. Can be re-used/left undisturbed but check it as per the service manual and if no good, or if in doubt, change it.
If changing the pump, the seals really should be renewed rather than re-used. You might get away with re-using the old ones but it isn't worth it.
OEM part numbers;
1 = 19200P13003 (OEM manufacturer is Yamada, comes with all seals)
2 = 19222P13300
3 = 19223P13300
After market options;
Plenty around.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Auxiliary drive belts;
Check all aux drive belts and renew if required, otherwise can be re-used. 13 is the alternator and air-con drive belt (on cars fitted with air-con)
OEM part number;
13 = 38920P0F505
1 is the alternator drive belt (cars not fitted with air-con)
OEM part number;
1 = 31110P12505
8 is the power steering drive belt
OEM part number;
8 = 56992PDE506
After-market options;
All belts are available after-market.
Part numbers are 6PK915 or 6PK913 (alternator without air-con); 6PK1043, 6PK1045 or 6PK1050 (alternator with air-con); 4PK1025 or 4PK1028 (power steering)
nb: you might also get away with belts slightly outside those ranges (e.g. 4PK1020 might also fit the power steering, since it's only 5mm shorter than 4PK1025).

This lists all parts that must or could sensibly be changed.
