Bb4 Gearbox Shifting Issues..Clutch Hunting

Post by Greg-SiR » Thu Jun 30, 2016 1:20 pm

Never had any trouble with this car's shifting through the 5spd box so i'm heading back from from work tonight and drop from 5th to 4th for a motorway lane change and it felt terrible,it changed but was feeling stiff and i went to go back to 5th and it wouldn't go.

Tried a few times on the motorway obviously at driving speed but it wouldn't budge and i didn't want to force it,i had pressure from the clutch slave and the pedal but it felt tight and no allowance to shift so i made it home to the driveway which was fun in 4th thankfully at night i can do the route without stopping
So pulled in and shut the car off or i would have hit the garage door and i was able to get back the gearshifts so started it backup and was able to shift through the lot stationary and idling so i brought it out for a quick spin,it's hesitant and noisey with some vibration on the pedal,oh dear.

Had clutches slip before and slave cylinders go so any ideas on this...

Throw bearing ?not that i know exactly what that is but i am aware of it,car as it is most certainly not driveable

It could be that the clutch needs replacing. Sometimes the clutch material is fine but one of the springs from the clutch plate breaks loose which can stop the engagement of the clutch.

Does sound like you need a new clutch.
Ive had an intermittent sticky first gear which has been improved a bit with a fluid change to Torco MTF but probably need to replace the clutch sometime soon.
The OEM clutch of choice over here is ATR clutch kit no.22105-PDE-325 @ £150-£160
This is what i have in my BB4 and what will be going into the BB1
You can use Amsoil.Torco or Honda MTF
1996-2000 1993 EG9 Blue Civic 1.6 Vti - Traded in against the BB4
2000-2019 1994 2WS BB4 Milano Red JDM Prelude Si VTEC LSD

2015 on > 1991 4WS BB1 Phantom Pearl Grey JDM Prelude Si VTEC LSD
2021 ON > 1998 2WS BB6 White Pearl JDM Prelude Si VTEC

Thanks fellas,i have no history on the cars service points so no idea how old it is in there.
Just never had one die on me this way and Merlin your theory sounds about right,it feels like something is blocking it from engaging..
Looks like i am off shopping for one then, thinking of the heavy duty Exedy and a possible lightened flywheel which i always wanted in a car to experience the difference and it's so close to becoming weekend car too, bloody timing :x
Thats the tax return more or less spent then!
Will investigate it a bit more tomorrow when i'm off but the result is pretty clear, think i can make it to the workshop with a few stop/starts ;)

I'd agree with the guys, if you haven't lost any fluid and master and slave are fine, I'd be looking at the clutch.
FWIW, I have an Exedy in mine and a fidanza lightened wheel, it's a nice mod. :)

Good to hear 8-)

Went round the block today in it and i can change under very low revs and not all the time.

I'll start looking online tomorrow for the replacement.

I've been window shopping any thoughts on these prices?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIDANZA-Flywh ... 2002969287

^^Wait will be a PITA but can't find seem to find one down here and the price seems ok....

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/151459801267 ... EBIDX%3AIT

Exedy clutch is local and can be had in 1 business day price seems the best so far too..

Edit just found this and ships here too https://www.amazon.com/EXEDY-08805-Raci ... ch+prelude

Any insight to the variation on the clutches and is stage 1 and heavy duty not just the same more or less?

Quoted $350ish labour which is lower than expected, last time i got the job done in the old lude it was $550 :o

If I were you I'd go:

Competition clutch flywheel (or any other forged single piece flywheel) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMPETITION-C ... 5KDmt07ZKA

and the ATR clutch kit http://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/genuine- ... p-592.html

Thanks Merlin i am considering all options, why is the ATR one so favoured?

Obviously it's genuine Honda but is it really that good for a standard spec'd item over other brands at the entry level?

Its a good price, OEM and trustworthy. It's not just the quality of the clutch plate but the bearing as well. For the price difference it is a no-brainer IMO.
