Remove engine or not?

I've had a couple of leaks from the engine since I've had my H22A8 so I'm going to change various seals and gasket (i know the leak locations more or less).
I've got oil pump area gaskets, distributor and crankshaft main oil seal to change so the question is:
Shall I do it all in situ, or would it be easier to pull the engine and gearbox to do the work outside of the engine bay?
I'm fitting a lightened flywheel while I'm at it.
Cheers.

If you are removing transmission and also doing all that work related to timing belt side you might as well pull the whole thing out and work on it on an engine stand. It'll make it a hell of a lot easier and if it is out you may as well replace all the other small gaskets as well.
Gives you an excuse to give the block and transmission a nice fresh coat of paint to clean it up.
With the flywheel definitely replace the rear main seal as well, all the axle seals.
I'm doing pretty much the same thing, replacing every single seal on the motor when i do my swap, already have all my seals as well.

I did a lot of the seals timing belt side when I did the the cam-belt, water pump...etc about a year ago. It was stupid of me to not think of taking the end plate off at the same time and do the oil pump seals aswell.
I'll let you know how I get on.

how many km have you done since last timing belt? a lot of people tend to skip on the oil pump gasket lol its very common since they don't really think about it at the time.
I would inspect the auto tensioner while your at it make sure its still good since they are known to fail.
Like i said since your pulling transmission out anyway you are already losening the bolts off the rear and transmision side mount, all that is left is the driver side and front mount, unmount the ac condensor let it hang, move the power steering pump to the side and out it comes haha.
All the best to you!

only because I intend on doing the whole engine I would probably say pull the whole engine makes for a better view of everything in and around.

15000km or so, i fitted a new auto-tensioner at the same time.
I'm getting on to it this afternoon, so I keep you posted.

It will be lots of extra hassle to get the engine out but doing all the work with the engine in is also a PITA!
If you are doing lots of seals and other bits, yes it is worth the effort to take the engine out. Since it is out will you be painting it?
Do you have an engine crane and engine stand?

Take pics of your work and all seals you replace so others can see for future reference

wish you all the best!

I'm just about to bring it in on the ramp now. Old pops is in charge so i'll speak to him about doing the work in situ or pulling the engine.
@Merlin, I'm doing the work stated above in my first post + a service. I'm pushed for time as work has been manic this week so I'm going to clean down/paint as much as I can IF needed. The main concern here is fixing the leaks and doing the service. Unfortunately I haven't got the time to pamper
