VTEC Crossover sounding less agressive?

So recently my VTEC has started to sound less agressive and at crossover the "pull" is less noticeable than it has been before. It feels more like a surge of turbo like power than the distinctive VTEC punch it usually is.
I've recently changed the oil and changed the plugs to NGK Iridium plugs away from the old BOSH plugs that were in there when I bought the car a year or two ago.
There is still power after crossover so it SEEMS to be working, just "less" if that makes sense..
Is there anything I can or should first check other than the usual of spark, fuel, air?

The way I see it I think that's a good thing? The smoother the crossover the more evenly the power (or whatever you want to call it) is distributed? The recent change of oil and plugs probably means its running more propererer and you've regained some stuff pre-VTEC.
I hope that makes sense and I hope it's right, I'm sure I've read several times that a smooth crossover is preferable.

Yeah Vtec shouldn't "kick" it should be a smooth transition

Well that's put my mind at ease. It's always been like a punch to the back of the head before so seemed a little odd when it wasn't there

The vtec solenoid has a metal mesh "filter" built into its gasket, give that a clean because it can get gritted right up

The "kick" is normally due to the power tailing off before the 2nd set of cams kick in, so in a proper working engine it should be a smooth cross over

What does that do? I hear a multitude of tales about this fabulous solenoid filter but I don't know what it is really...
EDIT: Other than filter...
