Only similar problem i had like that before was when the timing belt slipped due to faulty autotensioner - car would only rev to 3k.
I hope thats not the problem you have but you could check the timing by removing the rocker cover and upper belt cover.

No chance to look at it last night, hopefully this evening.
Broke the spare (used) knock sensor on attempted removal (think that's common - they go brittle)
Have two spare ecu's on hand, no idea what they came off and whether auto or manual (forgotten how you tell - is it the "MT" bit? !)

It is the MT bit, but you've fixed it already.....

Right, sorry I didn't update this thread... It was all a rush at the time!
Problem was sorted.

Fixing the exhaust (getting the holes welded up) and changing the Lambda sensor made no difference - same problem.
So basically I had ruled out all the service items on the ignition system by that point (plugs/leads/cap/rotor) plus the lambda sensor and the VTEC controller, but not;
- Coil
- Knock Sensor
- ECU

I swapped in a spare ECU and... It was immediately fine and hasn't re-ocurred since (now nearly 2 months later).

I'm frankly, amazed - really find it hard to believe that the ECU has failed (but no doubting that's what it was) and, more worryingly... if it has, I'm wondering what caused it to fail!

I have had the knackered ECU apart since and can't see any obvious problems with it at all.

Anyway, am now rocking a standard/non-chipped ECU again... :| woo!

lol.. it can be pain cant it.

I have decided to leave work at 4 and call the AA guys over and see what they have to say. Considering I pay them I may as well make use of them.

Your car however seems to be a bit of a mind maze bud.
I came before the chicken.. The argument is now settled!!

I wonder if you were to reflow the solder if it would work again
