oil leak

Post by kriswhalem523xtc » Sat Jun 30, 2018 5:27 pm

HI, I was just letting my 4th gen prelude tick over on the drive to warm up and after about 5 mins I noticed a large oil slick under the car, engine still ticking over nicely so I switched off and the oil leak stopped. All I can think of was a loose filter but just had it jacked up and although the oil definitely came from that area, which is very difficult to access without a ramp/pit especially as the car is lowered , the filter seemed to be tight and the oil pressure switch underneath it seemed ok as well, all seems ok looking from above the engine , any ideas anyone what next to check???

It'll be the seal behind the oil filter housing most likely

The oil filter spins onto a cooler which is bolted to the block he rubber seal on that is known to perish and leak.

If the oil is dripping onto the drive shaft and exhaust, then it could well be the oil cooler, like I had on my 4G. Just needed a new seal to sort it out.

yep likely culprit will be the oil cooler o ring - cheap part from Honda.
i will look and see if i can find the part number.
you will have to remove the oil filter and undo the bolt in the centre which holds the oil cooler to the block - take to old seal out and put the new one and tighten it back up. There is no real recess for the oring to fit into so the trick is getting it to stay in place whilst its bolted back up. some use a bit of grease to hold the oring in place. You will need a deep socket to get the bolt out - think its a 26mm or something - maybe someone else knows.

Edit - found some info from a previous post

here is the part number for the oil cooler o ring
Oil cooler seal - Honda pt no.91316-pe7-730 62.4X3.1
Htune or Honda - should be under a tenner for the part ;)

For the oil cooler O-Ring change, pics and 'how to' description are in the black BB1 profile linked in my footer. You can do it on the drive.

If it's not leaking on the passenger side driveshaft, but is coming from the side of the engine... You might be unlucky like I've been on my green BB1 and you've had an oil seal go (balancer shaft or main crank)
If it's coming from above the gearbox, the distributor seal is another favourite, or the camshaft end seal.
