Oddball braking/gearbox problem

Post by Drax » Wed Dec 26, 2018 9:39 pm

since fixing the recent ignition switch problem, i took the lude for a drive and half way down the road i had a horrible grinding noise :?
couldnt really see any issues (didnt help that it was dark) so turned around to drive it home but each time i hit the braking i had a horrible shuddering/locking feedback from the brakes which was so bad i tried every effort to engine brake on the way home and not brake at all.

after consulting with a few LG'ers Wurly, Phil & Njord ive take off both rear wheels and checked then rotated ok with the handbrake off which they did

I then took off both front wheels and they did not rotate feely at all, they were pretty stiff. so the next eve i removed a brake caliper and tried again but the wheel was still stiff to rotate. i then started the car, reversed and the brakes worked perfect. put it in first gear (clutch is oddly high, has been since day 1 even with a brand new clutch) and moved forward then gently hit the brakes and got the same shuddering/locking feedback from the brakes :?

i then repeated this and it was exactly the same again - fine braking in reverse but not rolling forward...in or out of gear.
most likely suggestion so far is the LSD (a new helical M-Factory one) has something caught in it causing the shuddering/locking feedback from the brakes.

apparently @Ted had a diff issue a few years back? not sure if he is still active on here, plus if anyone else has a suggestion i'd be grateful. really REALLY hoping its not a gearbox problem but i fear it is

does sound like gearbox to me based on what you've said.

You can get pad transfer to the disc that causes sticky spots on the disc (if youve done a track day recently), but since the wheels are still stiff to rotate when the pad/caliper is removed, and it doesn't happen in reverse, then i think you are starting in the right area worrying about the gbox or driveline.

I doubt it would be a wheel bearing or binding CV joint , little bit tricky to test as soon as you pull the CV out of the gbox you'll loose half your oil - but that would rule out everything from the wheel/hub/bearing/cv inner/outer.

Who built the gearbox dude?

Do you have any friends in the automotive industry with a set of phono’s “ ears “ you can hook up to diff housing suspension leg and gearbox body

No shuddering under acceleration ?

Pull shafts out of the hubs and again turn, difficult I know but that eliminates hubs keep us posted @Drax

Ok, d*ckhead alert here. After Wurlys advice to still remove both front calipers, I found the side I didn't remove the other day somehow had a bolt missing... Doesn't seem to be sheared so I can only guess I've forgotten to put it back in...
