What battery?

Post by ATR84 » Thu Aug 27, 2020 3:41 pm

Getting a new battery, to match the theme under the bonnet a red/black one would fit right in, and if I can save a bit of weight in the process, why not?

Anybody got any experience with these? https://batterygroup.co.uk/starter-batt ... gLvDvD_BwE

Is it a straight swap? Will I need anything other than the battery? Anybody got any other recommendations for a lightweight battery?

Check it out.
I went from OEM (18kg) to a Stinger SPV44 (12kg).
Then to an identical rebrand Odyssey PC1200T.

A smaller battery would go flat very quick I'd imagine.

That battery linked is unsuitable (motorcycle) - it's only 16Ah capacity and only provides 170A cranking power (the starter in the prelude is 1.2/1.4kw i think, so that 100A minimum just to crank, and you'll want headroom to let the battery last rather than strain it every time you start). You could probably run your stereo for an hour before you couldn't start again...

Given that a flat battery is going to leave you stranded somewhere (or worse still, a faulty battery that's been worked too hard and fails sooner makes the car behave strangely), that's the last thing you want on an enjoyable weekend road car. Remember the Spousal Acceptance Factor - they wont appreciate your talk of 'saved 10 kilos' , but they will remember the time you got stuck in a pub car park.

When it came to replacing mine, I measured how much space there was, and then got the physically largest / highest capacity battery I could fit in the space. Halfords, under 100quid, yuasa grey job - went straight in. Found the old post:
Onto the prelude, battery hasn't shown green in its inspection window for a while despite healthy alternator output, and a little on the small side capacity wise (think it was 55ah). After checking the physical size, got myself a yuasa '030' size battery in 75ah capacity from halfords (£98). Not that the old battery had trouble starting, but this is much happier, one potential problem headed off.
A lot of online places list a smaller battery as 'acceptable' , but 75ah is a decent size - don't have to worry about it then.

Cheers guys, ok so a small one sounds like a risk. I certainly don't want it going flat.

Here, it says this battery has been used for loads of different cars, this one deffo won't be good for me no?

I have no amp, sub, dash cam or anything.

the pc680 is the same battery that you first linked to.

I have no doubt it would start the car, but these are designed for race cars that have all the electronics ripped out. In a normal car, fitting a 16ah battery in place of a 60/70/80ah battery is just a bad idea. It wont last as long because it is being worked harder, it will go flatter much much quicker if you left your lights on or left it sitting. And then you have the problem that the little batteries don't have the right terminals, so you then have to get those aswell on top.
