Horrible noise

Post by TitzonToast » Fri Jan 22, 2021 7:37 pm

Got it sorted today, mostly. It was my first time tackling a job this big if I'm honest. I had a guy working away near me for backup if I needed him.
I'm not 100% sure what happened if I'm honest. The TB and water pump were only changed about 500 miles ago.
It was whining away and driving me mad so I found a guide on here about adjusting the auto tensioner, I think I made a boo boo and rotated the crank pulley in the wrong direction when I tried to do it myself.

I completely stripped everything and started from scratch, I reset the auto tensioner and put everything back together and it worked. I rotated the engine a good few times by hand and the timing marks all matched up so I buttoned everything back up and it seems to have worked.

The only problem I had was that the car didn't really want to idle very well afterwards. I'm gonna have a good look through it tomorrow morning to see if I can spot something.

Wish me luck!

I don't trust the auto tensioner I reused, I found a manual tensioner online and it landed this morning. I'm gonna head down to my mate's workshop on Monday and fit it.
I also suspect that I got the timing marks off on one of the balance shafts when I was nailing it back together last time too.
I'll be more confident with what needs to be done this time around and hopefully get in it done for good.

Edit. I can't figure out how to post images again!

Before you put the manual tensioner on, and before you remove the auto tensioner, have a feel at the timing belt for tension, to try and get an idea for how tight it should be. Because when you use the manual tensioner it's easy to make the belt too tight.

I don't think there is official guidance on the tension because it came with the auto tensioner

Will do, I found a video made by the original manufacturers of the manual tensioner, they recommended three spots to check the tension on.

I plan on rotating the engine with no spark plugs in for as long as it takes before I'm satisfied that it's 100%.
I wanna get this done properly once and for all.

Got it sorted today finally. Took me a lot longer than I would have liked but I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have to go back in again.
The manual tensioner is a nice bit of kit and worth it for the peace of mind alone.
I took the whole timing kit off and started from scratch, it wasn't in correctly if if I'm being honest. The intake cam wasn't in line with the timing marks properly and one of the balancer shaft pulleys was out a good bit out too.

It fired right up afterwards and ran like a watch. I'm a happy man and I've earned this cold beer. Cheers.

Cheers lads, glad to finally be at a point were I can put some miles on it before I start nailing on some of the upgrade parts I've been squirreling all these years.
A thorough engine bay detail is badly needed too. Does anyone happen to know the part number for the rocker cover gasket set please?
