Major oil leek HELP!!!!!

Post by W1ggz » Wed Dec 12, 2012 4:10 pm

Hi guys popped out to change a battery on a customers car today left the car running, after a few minutes there was a puddle of oil under the car about a litre i would say pouring out, check the oil level was just over minimum so drove it back to work only short distance down the road, there is a trail from where i was to work and then another puddle now at my work, took the rocker cover off and there is oil all over the cambelt, i have taken the side cover off but nothing obvious from there. its below the head gasket any advice or ideas or knowledge of a previous problem would be great before i attempt stripping it down, something i have never done before

Balance shaft seal at a guess, common for them to go and dump the oil very quickly

Exactly this! Same thing happened to me.

Not that bad, but definitely not fun. You'll need a full timing belt change, and once you get in that deep you can replace the seal. There is a retainer you can fit too, to stop this happening again.

If you in there, might want to do the auto tensioner and water pump to, all depends on funds

Just take your time when you do it man - full guide is in the Workshop Manual (link in the wiki above).

The H23 tensioner conversion might be a good shout, specially since you'll be in there anyway.

The bible is pretty good and if you've got access to workshop tools the bottom pulley won't be of any hindrance to get off.

I had problems getting the auto tensioner back in as I swapped it for a 2nd hand one and didn't have the clip to keep it under tension while you fit it. But if you go manual then you don't have to worry
