97-98 are H22A5 (185bhp), 99+ are H22A8 (197bhp).

Compression mainly.

From Carrisma's page on il interneto:
I don't think that the differences between the H22A5 & H22A8 engine have been fully documented for the public, but after research I have found the differences are with the:

Air intake ducting & filter housing are a different design using "dynamic chambers",
Camshafts with increased lift,
Different pistons increasing the compression ratio from 10.0 to 11.0,
Enlarged throttle body from 60 to 62 mm,
Exhaust manifold / down pipe is cylindrical as opposed to oval,
Exhaust piping has an increased bore of 57 mm instead of 50.8 mm,
Flexible pipe before the catalytic converter is shorter,
Catalytic converter is 5cm longer at 39.5cm,
Optimised ignition and injection timing,
Valve seats readjusted from 60 to 45 degrees,
Presence of a knock sensor on the H22A8
