Wheel rotation on jacks

Hey guys, this relates to a DC2 integra, but I have a prelude as well and I know this is a helpful forum

Anyway ive been investigating a buzzing noise while driving that is progressively getting worse especially when i turn left, suspect right front wheel bearing even though theres no play in the wheel???

Anyway while the front was jacked up and in gear, drivers side wheel is spinning freely and you CANT stop it by shoving your foot against it (normal right) However passenger side will only spin if you give it a shove, (no biggy maybe just brakes catching) BUT if you grab the wheel it just stops, the engine continues to tick over in gear.

Is this normal or does it have something to do with the LSD?

Do you have a LSD?

Dc2 is LSD only

In that case it's fine for you to be able to stop just one of the wheels whilst in gear. The whole point of a LSD is to distribute drive according to resistance (for a better simpler word). If you completely stop spinning one wheel and the drive will go to the other. But does sound like the brake is binding. Go out for a cruise, try not to brake too hard throughout, then come to a gentle holt and check the temperature of both the front calipers. Sounds like your driver's side should be cool enough to touch, but if your passenger side is binding then it will be noticably hotter.

With regards to your intial issue, could be the bearing and possibly to minor to be able to feel any play by hand, but can obviously get worse. Or it could just be the early stages of your CV joint going. Have you checked to see if the boot is split at all?

Yeah it has LSD, Type R, still dont understand why one wheel can be stopped but not the other one, fair enough if both could be stopped and drive continued on the opposite wheel, but this only happens on one side.

I have checked all CV boots look ok, the noise is a constant humming, I have read its possible for the bearing to fail without any extra play in the wheel?

You could stop the driver's wheel if you really tried, but if the passenger wheel is being slowed up by a binding brake then the drive in the driver's wheel is increased making it that much harder to stop. If that makes sense.

And yes, the bearing is obviously make up of a lot of ball bearings, some of them may be more pitted than others, but there may be enough decent ones to keep the bearing races free from play. The few knackered ones will be the ones creating the noise though and the bits worn from these knackered ball bearings will gradually erode the rest.

Yeah makes sense, I will clean the calliper today and see what happens and continue to monitor the bearing.
