Compression Test Results and Spark Plugs

Post by vti2003 » Sat Jan 26, 2013 11:19 am

Morning all,

Can somebody just give me some advice on these bits please :)

I have searched but the info I need for the a8 engine seems to all be hearsay and I know some of you on here know more than I ever will so......

Serviced the car this morning and thought I would do a compression test while I was at it.

Car warmed up first, dizzy unplugged, fuel pump disabled and tested for 8 seconds on WOT

Results were : 278 274 263 278

Tested twice and got basically the same results, these were on a dry test.

One is obviously lower than the others - is that an issue or is is going to cause an issue further down the line.

Second Question,

Took the plugs out and they were nice and dry and the rightish sort of colours. New plugs in and out for a drive - a normal drive driving to about 4-4.500 rpm. Plugs out still nice and dry.

Out for another drive, warmed it up and then gave it a damn good thrashing, almost redline style - back home plugs out and some oil on the ends of the threads.

Is that normal - I do get a single puff of smoke out of the exhaust as I go into VTEC on a journey, it is only on the first time I hit VTEC and there is never any more on that journey and it is only enough to be able to notice it at night if there is a car close behind with headlights on. Can't see it in daylight. You can hit VTEC, get a puff of smoke, drive normally for an hour and hit it again and no smoke, so it really is only once.

The engine is an a8 and it has 118000 miles on it with an absolutely complete service history. It drives smoothly and accelerates smoothly, no noises no lumpiness etc.

From the above what so the engine wizards think. Is it healthy or am I gonna be expecting some work shortly?

Any advice appreciated. :) :)

the comp test should be within 5-10% of each other i think so you are fine there as far as i know.

the h22 does burn a bit of oil when you are beating it over the head but i cant really comment further on this as i honestly dont have the knowledge.

If its any consolation my type S burns 2l of oil every 1000 miles and will loose any liquid poured into the chambers down the ringlands yet still managed to beat a tiptop Motegi A8 and a stripped 4th. Smokes like a bitch with the hammer down and puffs terrible on overrun but still beats all other ludes its gone against...

cant see any serious work coming up imho.
6th gen Prelude please Mr Honda. RWD 2.4 turbo lude.

Cheers for that - sounds like I don;t have too much to worry about then.

Mine does burn oil but about 1/2 litre every 2-2500 miles.

Hopefully someone who knows can help out :)

Except mine ;)

I get similar smoke with mine as yours vti and the rings were changed 12k ago

The first blast on a run is smoke the clears up. Do you find it a tad smokey when you first start it?

Theres nithing wrong with your engine but only hitting vtec once an hour is a criminal offence punishable by flogging at japfest.

Yeah it can be a bit smokey on startup (white smoke) but never worried about it as the wife's 11 month old 5000 mile Citroen is even more smokey on startup - Her's doesn't have that manly smell of unburnt petrol tho  I have always assumed that first smokey puff was a bit of a clearout - both my B16 civics did it too.

Out of interest - when you say the rings were changed, was that a total strip down and rebuild or just change the rings?

Sliproad onto motorway - sliproad off with traffic between - it's the only excuse I can think of right now

White smoke on startup=condensation. Preludes overfuel and stink of fuel its just having a bloody good fart!

On startup I get some hazy blue smoke, think its valve stems suffering a little post oil pump fail.

As for cost, it's head off, sump off and crank out to do the rings, may as well do main bearings while you're there. Drop rich @ PAW a PM for a price ;)
