Lude Generation

Hi guys - I'm a newbie so apologies if this topic has been done to death, but I'd appreciate some advice...

I've just put a K&N panel filter in and it has made a small but nice improvement to the general throttle response, especially in the mid-range. Having traditionally driven torquey Rover V8s and Rover T-series engined cars, that was a very welcome upgrade as the Prelude VTEC feels very weak everywhere except at the top end, where it goes like stink!

Anyway, I've seen people talking about removing the resonator from the airbox - what exactly (and where) is it? Is it the intake duct, going into the airbox?

Are there any performance gains to be had? Has anyone dyno'd them?

I don't really want to go the whole hog and put a cone filter on, but am intrigued by the mysterious resonator!

Hi David, there are mixed views on this.. some people say Honda got it right, others say removal is the way forward.
As far as I remember, you rip out all plastic gubbins at the front end of the air intake, inside inner wing and bumper and leave it at that!

Yeah, the resonator is located in the drivers side wing, underneath the headlight.

You need to remove/lower the front wheel arch trim to get at it.

If its more midrange torque you're after I'd suggest leaving it in place & source yourself a Type-S/ 5g h22a8 intake pipe (from airbox to throttle body)



Without the resonator you may gain a couple of BHP up top at best & some induction noise on VTEC- but not a lot else.

agree with chris but the added growl from the engine does wonders for your mental state. it goes much more stink at the top and sounds much better.

unless you have done it before and know where the recessed bolts are on the resonator I would seriously advise taking the front bumper off. you will then have three bolts to undo and the rubber connector to remove. make sure you block off the vac line that goes to the butterfly valve attached to it. Bumper removal takes maybe 20 mins but offers little real challenge from a technical point of view.

Not taking the bumper off is going to take you much much longer and result in skinned knuckles etc... imho.

get the type S intake and remove the resonator for good giggles.
