EGR AGAIN!

Well I was out in the lude on sunday (driving to the in-laws) and my CEL popped on again.
When I arrived I pulled the code and 12 again. EGR valve.
I only cleaned it in January and I've only done about 400miles in the car since, if that.
It can't be clogged up again already can it? Well I'm going to take it off again tonight after work and have a look.
Seriously thinking about just removing it now.

If the EGR chamber itself is clogged I suppose it could easily back up the system to the EGR valve. If the chamber is clogged the EGR valve is doing sweet FA, other than firing more carbon into the chamber, which can't go anywhere.
What is the inside of the pipe like that goes off to the intake manifold?

Well I've Just taken it off again. Theres some carbon on it, but it's not like it looks that bad really. The little piston on the diaphragm looks a little scored though. I'm guessing this is causing it to catch and not open?
I've not looked at the pipe? you mean the little thin one that comes off the top and runs off across the fuel rail?
the inside of the block where it comes off looks pretty coked up though.

Do you have another EGR you could test with?

Well I took the one off the tacklude tonight. It's coked up to crap as you'd expect after who knows how long.
BUT... it still moves freely, unlike my old one did.
So I'm gonig to give this one a good clean out now and fit it. Hopefully that should sort it.

On a 4th an EGR CEL means the EGR valve isn't responding in the way the ECU wants it to (as detected by the 3 wire sensor on the EGR valve itself). IIRC it has nothing to do with coke inside the IM, or emissions.
The EGR is controlled by the vac solenoid near the PS reservoir, so check the vac line from the EGR, into and out of this solenoid, all the way back to the IM. Also check the solenoid itself is plugged in properly and there are no splits or leaks.
I'd guess you might have a leak on the EGR valve diaphragm, or that scoring on the piston you mentioned is causing it to stick/catch. I can't remember if there's a non-return valve somewhere on that line as well. If so check it's the right way round.
