Question gents ...
Question gents ...
On a fifth gen h22a5, do both balance shafts have replaceable seals?
I've a slight leak from the rear shaft seal (the one with the gear) but my mechanic isn't sure if a seal can be replaced on that shaft?!
Please help!
Thanks,
Owen

I think this is the end of the rear balance shaft? Seems to be weaping, does anyone know if this has a seal behind the gear?
I was under the impression the front balance shaft was more prone to popping seals, though I believe there is a retainer clip to help this, I'm a little confused as to whether there is one of these for each shaft?

depends where its leaking from, the gearing in there is lubricated with oil fed from the pump, thus pressurised although IIRC its fairly low and drains straight back into the block via a hole in the oil pump plate.pyemaster wrote:Interesting, could it be the same size seal does both shafts though?
How else is that shaft holding oil at bay?!
Anyone?
Owen
there is a gasket for the housing for this gearing that comes off the balance shaft.
you may need to log in but have a look here

if its leaking from behing the gear you mayneed a new housing as i cant see a seal for it

Leaking from the rear balance shaft seal which is apparently £270 just for the part. Seeing as it's low pressure on this seal and it's only weeping I may look to get it done in the future if it ever gets worse.
If anyone thinks this is a catastrophically bad idea can you shout!?
Also, can the front balance shaft retainer clip be fitted without having to remove the belt and assembly? Aka just fitted by itself in a one-off job?
Cheers
