Hi folks,

Just a quick one!! As I've never bought a clutch before, are remanufactured ones any good?? At a third of the price of a brand new one it's a temptation... It's just the word remanufactured puts me off

as it should on a part you cant see. no personal experience but I wouldn't with something that takes so long to get at.

The question you really need to ask yourself, is can you afford a second set of labour (or be bothered with the work doing it yourself again) to find a new one if the remanufactured on jobbies itself?

I bought a clutch off ebay a few years back for my MR2, turns out it was a jobby chinese copy and it exploded (literally) within 50 miles. Ended up buying a BluePrint one for £20 more but having to pay a second labour bill to have it fitted. Expensive lesson

How do you remanufacture a clutch

Pressure plate wears on the finger springs and the main face. By the time you've replaced them, the only thing you've got left is the cheap pressed cover plate.
As for the friction plate, that wears and the frame that the friction material is rivetted to is a tiny part of it not worth the effort I wouldn't have thought?
I wouldn't fancy re-using the friction plate springs either tbh because they'll have lost some of their elasticity.
And the release bearing? No thanks!

So all in all, if it's done right, I can't really see how it's worth remanufacturing? If it's not done right, definitely not worth risking it!

Cheers guys, I've found an old stock blueprint one for a tenner more so will probably go for that! Was just interested as to if the remanufactured ones were any good. Out of interest, do they just renew the friction surface?

woah woah the remanufactured part is the friction plate and there is nothing wrong with them as long as you go to a good place for it to be done.
I am sure someone on here had a stage 2 or 3 clutch that was absolute crap and had that remanufactured and it was great after.

To use my OEM clutch as an example, when my clutch failed it was the springs that gave out and not the friction plate. It had plenty of meat left. Personally I wouldn't get a refurbed clutch as there is more to a clutch then just friction material.

Remanufactured friction plate would be fine, but does it come with a new pressure plate (or at least the finger springs and skim/thickness check on the pressure plate) and new thrust bearing then?

if so, I'm just surprised it's worth their time to remanufacture the friction plate with the other bits being newand be able to sell for less?

you need to find out from them what exactly is remanufactured

EDIT: Grrr, this last post took of mine too so long to submit (I was on phone on 3g) that it's appeared in completely out of sequence and when others have basically made that point! lol
