VTEC working or not?

Morning all - ok, hopefully this is not too daft a question. I've spent a fair bit on getting a lot things sorted on my H22 4th Gen and I'd like to ask about the whole VTEC thing.
I know this may sound completely stupid but how do I know it's kicked in? How do I know it's working as it should? Does it only work if I've got the "Sport" button depressed ?(I have an automatic) Is there a magical point where I should hear or feel something?
Apologies if I sound like a total dimwit but I'd really like to know in case there's something amiss that needs fixing.
Appreciate any direction you gentlemen can offer on this issue. Many thanks, Simon.

When your engine is up to operating temperature, floor it in 2nd or 3rd gear - if it revs past 6.5k then you have VTEC, if the limiter stops you from going over that then you don't. Sometimes there is an audible change in the exhaust note at just over 5k, but if your VTEC is really smooth you may not hear anything.

4g doesn't have a limiter or if it does its set to limp mode which is 3500k if I remember right put it in sport mode and floor it when you hit 5000-5500 the engine note should change and become harder and depending on your valve clearances the vtec crossover will either be smooth or violent,

A manual 4g does. It's at 6.5k when VTEC isn't working...

What is the code of your engine? If it is H22A2, then VTEC is really smooth. If H22A - you should definitely hear and feel the difference. Search for VTEC videos on youTube and you'll understand what to expect.

I forgot to plug my VTEC solenoid in after a gearbox swap which is how I found this out. I got a CEL at crossover and then a limiter at 6.5k

Another way to check is drive flat out past a group of girls at a bus stop or similar, if their clothes fly off then VTEC kicked in, yo!
