Faulty fuel gauge???

Post by snike77 » Mon Sep 09, 2013 11:13 am

Hi

I wondered if anyone had any advice, or has experienced any similar problems

I seem to have a faulty fuel gauge,

I have had the car for nearly 3 years now so know the car pretty well, and i know for example, when i put in £20 of petrol, how much fuel i will get for that on the gauge, and i know how many miles i will get from that amount of fuel

last week, i put in £20 the gauge went up top the usual amount, but after i had reached the amount of miles i know that £20 will give me, the needle had gone down a little but not anywhere near as to where it should have gone down to,

so anyway, i put another £20 in and the needle rose to well above what fuel i should have in the car, again, done the mileage i know £20 will give me, and again the needle had gone down even less, and again when i reached the mileage and put some more fuel in the gauge reads even more fuel again than i should have etc etc????

So the gauge and needle are working to an extent as it is moving when i put fuel in, but it isnt reading correctly

Has anyone had anything similar happen, or or advice as to how to resolve the issue

Thanks

only real issues ive had is the low fuel light doesnt go on anymore -(probably a blown bulb) and the needle isnt that accurate - when its low it can go from no bars to 2 bars - like merc says take a full jerry can and run it until the tank is empty that should tell you all you need to know. Sounds like your like me £20 max at the pump and it seems at the lower end of the scale the fuel guage isnt that accurate.

My fuel light hasn't been on for a while, I thought I had a blown bulb but it seems if you keep driving it past the bottom of the gauge eventually it lights up..

yeah, im a drive around on fumes kinda guy, so i normally wait until the fuel light comes on and fill up after a few miles of running around with it on, but as you say above, it just doesnt wanna come on anymore so maybe a bulb or something, i looked in fuses but i dont the fuel warning light has a fuse?
