Front LSD+4WS.

Post by Darkam_Fr » Fri Aug 19, 2016 1:03 am

Hi all.

4WS "feeling" is a frequently asked question but i'd like some opinions on it.
So here is my situation : after a leak I've not noticed, my rack and pinion is shot. I'm planing on doing an engine/gearbox swap, with an LSD gearbox.

As my rack and pinion needs replacing, I'm wondering if it worths it to make a 4WS conversion.
How will it handle with 4WS+LSD on the front ?

I know I need the 4WS rack and pinion with sensor, computer, harness, rear 4WS system, and steering column.
I'm doing all of this on a 5th gen 2.0l LHD, do I forget something ?

The prelude handles totally different with 4ws. Biggest Advantage is Highspeed lane Change and parking i guess. It has much more grip on the rear. I have 215 40 17 and the car understeers badly. aS my lude is not Set up right now it feels much worse then my old bb1 with locked 4ws. It was close to a dc2. I think the 4ws can be an Advantage if everything is Set up perfecrly, but righr now iam not sure if id suggest upgrading it. Its also extra weight.. my Future Plans is to get an lsd too and get wider tires. Maybe 225 or 235 Front and stay 215 rear.(and 45 again) With a Little more Offset on the rear (also for optical reasons) and more camber on the front. Plus a few struts should do the Job.. 4ws shouldnt be different in the 5gen

Well comparing working 4ws on 5gen and not working for a while now, i can say that with 4ws not working, car is very unstable. Rear is floating from side to side. With 4ws working, car was changing lanes in highway like a formula 1. Much more stable and fun to drive.

When its "broken" the 4WS is stabilized by a Spring! If you dont lock it car handles horrible

Theres an adjusting pin, wich is not made for driving according to the hondabook. But the previous owner did that and it worked. Maybe if you fake the sensors to straigth should do the same job..

You can't lock 4WS. The locking pin is for wheel alignment purposes only.

A 4WS conversion will be hard to achieve. IMO is is much easier and cost effective to simply buy a 4WS car.

Apart from parking (I can't really notice it with lane changes) another thing I like with 4ws is going around roundabouts. At low speeds and tight cornering it helps noticeably.
