Hi guys when im turning at slow speed i hear a grinding noise. Ive been to the garage today and they said theres a slight play in the rear steering rack but nothing major. So my question is will repairing that fix the grinding noise or is it something else?

These things are always hard to diagnose over the internet as I'm sure you can imagine.

Is it definitely a grinding noise and not a knocking?

Can you tell whether it's coming from the front or rear of the car? (Probably need someone outside to determine this properly).

Do you have an LSD?

Can I welcome you to the club? ;-)

Just whilst turning the steering wheel? Or while the car is turning a corner?

Does it matter if you're going forward or back?

Does it matter whether you're turning left or right? How sharp a corner you're taking?

Does it sound like it's coming from the front or back?

It appears when im turning the wheel doesnt matter left, right, forward or backwards actually i can hear it when im stationary or travelling at low speeds(Maybe its there when i go faster but cant hear it).

To me that points to it not being gearbox related or anything down the line from there.

Could it be that the bearings in the alternator or pumps is away and is making a grinding noise?

Yeah, if you can hear the noise when you're stationary pop the bonnet and have a close listen. Though try not to loose any ears ;-)

Can you feel any abnormal vibrations/resistance in the steering wheel when you hear the grinding noise?
