Hi guys,

Quick one, 7x17 Et55, will it fit OK?
I'm on factory sports suspension and don't plan to go any lower, just having a hard time understanding the offset properly!

I had this same trouble the other day but Merlin did a good job in the thread linked in my sig.

In short, yes they'll fit okay.

I think offset 55 is ok. Pretty sure it's something to do with the distance of the connection from the centre of the wheel so the higher the offset the further away from the inside of the arch the wheel will be.

ET = Offset, which is (in its most simple terms) how far the wheel pokes out from the body. OEM wheels have an offset of ET55 if I remember correct, that means they sit comfortably within the wheel arch. My Rota's on my 5G have an offset of ET45 which means the outside of the wheel sits flush with the body of the car. My 4G is just about to have ET35 wheels fitted to it, which means the side of the wheels may poke out the side of the car a touch.

Offsets of ET25 and lower will really poke out of the wheel arch. Its when the car hits a bump and the suspension travels that rubbing can happen, the wheel hits the wheel arch.

To fit more agressive offests you can roll the arches to puff them out a bit and give more room for the wheel to travel up and down with the suspension. Also as others have said a mental negative camber may be needed to tuck the top of the wheel under the arch.

My Motegi wheels are 17x7 ET55 and they're fine, and I'm a bit lower than the OEM sports suspension. I only ever have trouble if I have 2 in the back and then on full lock the 4WS causes the rears to rub a tiny bit.

Handy if you want to compare wheels and get a better idea of what's going on, as long as you know the width and offset of the current wheel you're running and the new one you want to get.

I'd figured that the offset was an increase in distance from the hub rather than the other way round so higher = more pokey outey

I really should have just googled.
