Lude Generation

hiya guys on the last drive 2 weeks ago the 4ws came up ive never had a 4ws lude before so any pointers on where too start would be great its still on today by the way 2.2 uk 4th gen

Check 4WS error code? But i bet is the ecu itself. Resolder the 2 huge Relays ! common problem after 20+ years

First off, don't panic!
Despite all the scaremongering you will hear from sellers/the uneducated, after 15 years of lude ownership there's only one genuine 4WS issue that I know off and it's the one listed above and an easy fix. We can help with that if need be.

But just to clarify, did any other lights come up first? - Bulb/brake/ABS etc?

Check the error codes, but typically it will be one of the following:

Dry solder joints in the ecu, an easy repair even for the kack handed (about an hour start to finish).

A dodgy ABS sensor.

Misalignment of the front main steering sensor (another easy fix).

Wheel alignment.

Also, what can show up as an ABS sensor can just be down to a gaiter splitting and grease being chucked over everything - the sensor and the timing 'ring' on the CV outer, so that's worth a look first too. I've had this once or twice over the years.

I can't immediately find a write up on here (which is odd as I remember taking pics when I did MINE and thought I put them in my thread or something )

It looks scary but it's really not. The boards almost fold over like a book, take your time and you'll be fine.

Wow cheers fellas great response! Shes off the road now for a few months so i can get jobs done that i want and need to do, no other lights came up at all, i shall look at the error codes and let you all know

Yep, error codes is the first place to start, before jumping into anything else.

Going to have to find the way to do the codes ive completly forgotten how to do it since. My bb4 5 years ago

The service manual can be downloaded from the wiki area of the forum.

But in short, drivers side foot well, tucked in behind the centre console, blue two-pin connector. Short that with a decent bit of wire and turn the ignition on.
