Creeking noise when steering

Post by Lawrenceforce1984 » Sun Feb 11, 2018 1:38 am

Can anyone help . My prelude has started making a creeking noise from the drivers side wheel when steering. Could it be a damaged ball joint or bush? The car also pulls slightly to the right.

This is most probably lower ball joint. Jack the car up enough to get your head under there. Put a axle stand in for safety. Then get somebody to turn the steering and you should be able to listen to where its coming from. If not a garage might just diagnose for free if you have used them on a regular basis.

How hard is it to change a lower ball joint. Does it need to be pressed out or is it held in with a circlip?

The're pressed in and you have to take the whole knuckle off the car to get at it.

The way to test the lower ball joint is not to jack the car up at all, put a long screwdriver or a pry bar between the lower arm and the knuckle and lever it slightly whilst the weight of the car is on it. If there is any movement the ball joint will need replacing.

Lawrence
Blockhd is right! Lucky for me, mine twisted off just as I was pulling into the garage. I had to make a puller to get the tapered stub out of the a-arm. I found the change to be quite difficult but then I'm rather clumsy and have no patience.
