So after installing a new 4WS ECU (in the boot on the rhs) and resetting it now all works fine.
The ECU was preventing me from doing the reset procedure.
So for anybody wanting to check their 4WS
1. start by downloading the manual
2. try reset
3. try fuse 11 removal or battery disconnect
4. get a meter or scope and test the inputs into the ecu in the boot (procedure in the manual)
5. the system needs to be set at zero once you get it working (i have not done this and was lucky it worked )
