Cotter (split) pins on balljoints - are they necessary ?

Having worked on these parts at an OEM I can tell you they're safety critical and considering their cheap cost I wouldn't try living without them.

Replacing with nylocks is risky as the tightening torque will need to increase to ensure they seat properly.

Also, go buy a bag of stainless steel split pins off eBay for a fiver and never have this problem again......

The original question was whether I need the cotter pins or not bbecause the previous ones had been sheared off and were still in the bolt. I have tonnes of split pins.

i.e. Did I need to go through the effort of drilling thrm out. I've taken the joints off and drilled them out and everything is all back on now
